SANO-LA
(Strength and Nutrition Outcomes – Los Angeles) Maintenance Study

  • The overall aim of this study is to design and test the effects of an 8-month maintenance program to extend an intensive 16-week nutrition and exercise intervention to reduce risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in ‘high-risk’ overweight minority adolescents.

  • Participants from the intervention arms of the SANO-LA and STAND programs were invited to participate in the maintenance program. Participants were randomized to either a month group class or to receive a monthly newsletter.

  • At the one year mark of when they first began the 16 week program (i.e. after 8 months of followup), participants were invited to a final clinic visit. Main outcomes of this project include, dietary intake, physical activity by accelerometry and questionnaires, adiposity, and risk factors for type 2 diabetes as assessed by an IVGTT.
